University student commit suicide in Niger state as police uncover illicit drug traffickers in Enugu state.

A tragic incident has shaken Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, following the death of a 300 level undergraduate under circumstances authorities are still working to fully understand. The student, who hailed from Suleja in Niger State, was living in an off campus lodge near the university. He was not only a tenant in the building but also handled responsibilities on behalf of the property owner, including overseeing the facility and receiving rent payments from other occupants.

Accounts from the area suggest tension developed after the landlord demanded payment for the lodge. The student was reportedly unable to produce the requested funds at the time, a situation that allegedly placed him under intense pressure. Residents described him as deeply troubled in the days leading up to the incident. There are claims from some individuals in the community that the missing rent money may have been lost through betting activities, although this has not been officially confirmed. Investigators are treating such claims with caution as they work to separate verified facts from speculation.

After the incident, a handwritten note was reportedly found at the location, prompting further concern and raising questions about the events that preceded his death. University authorities and local residents have described the situation as deeply painful, especially for fellow students who knew him personally.

Security agencies have since been informed and have taken over the matter. A full investigation is expected to clarify what happened, establish responsibility where necessary, and determine whether other factors may have contributed to the loss of life.

The university community has been left in mourning, with students and residents calling for greater awareness around financial pressures faced by undergraduates living off campus. Many have also urged landlords and caretakers to adopt clearer systems that reduce misunderstandings and conflicts over rent. As investigations continue, authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring that official findings will be made public once inquiries are concluded.

Also, The Enugu state police command have intercepted and arrested illegal drugs traffickers this morning.

A routine early morning patrol by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command has led to the arrest of a young man and the recovery of banned drugs in different parts of the state capital. The operation was carried out by officers attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics unit while monitoring security activities around the Uwani area of Enugu. During the patrol, the officers stopped a 27 year old man identified as Desmond Obodo Chilota, who was moving around the area in a manner that raised suspicion.

Police sources revealed that the suspect was posing as a dispatch rider while transporting a large consignment of restricted tramadol tablets. The drugs were reportedly being conveyed on a red Kymco motorcycle, which was taken into custody along with the suspect.

Less than an hour later, during the same security sweep, officers made another discovery in the Onu Asata area of Ogui. A bag believed to contain crystal methamphetamine, commonly referred to as mkpuru mmiri, was found abandoned alongside an Android mobile phone. According to the police, the individuals suspected to be connected to the items took to their heels after noticing the presence of security operatives.

The spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incidents and stated that investigations are already underway. He added that efforts are being intensified to track down those who escaped, while the arrested suspect and all recovered items, including the motorcycle, are being examined as part of an ongoing probe. The police have reassured residents of Enugu of their commitment to sustaining surveillance operations aimed at curbing drug related activities and improving public safety across the state.
